Yahoo Finance stock price alerts provide a basic way to monitor your favorite stocks. It works fine if you just need a few basic alerts here and there.
But if you’re actively managing a portfolio and have real money on the line, its limitations quickly become frustrating.
There’s no alert dashboard, no email notifications, no recurring alerts, just the bare basics. That means you still have to track prices manually, which gets old really fast.
Can You Set Price Alerts on Yahoo Finance?
Yes, you can set and receive custom price alerts for stocks in Yahoo Finance app. You can add a custom price target, and once your target price is reached, you will get a standard push notification sent to your smart device.
PS! Yahoo Finance does not offer stock price alerts on its website, only via Apple and Android apps.
You can only get standard one-time “target price” alerts for your favorite stocks. Once alert is finished, it’s automatically disabled and can be seen at the end of the alerts list.
There is no limit for how many alerts you can add. Just remember, that each alert runs only once and gets disabled after that.
How to Set Price Alerts on Yahoo Finance
You can only set up stock price alerts on the Yahoo Finance mobile app, not in any browser, which is a shame.
Install Yahoo Finance mobile app
Open the app and search for a Ticker
On the top right corner, tap on the bell icon
Add Target price
Hit “Create”
View your alerts
And you are done. Your newly created alert appears on one long list of alerts. In addition to many limitations, Yahoo alerts have, you can see your alerts only after creating a new alert.
PS! Make sure to turn on push notifications, otherwise you will not receive any notifications.
Common Problems With Yahoo Stock Alerts
Inconsistent notifications - In several Reddit threads, investors have complained about Yahoo Finance price alerts not working well. Some users set price alerts but do not receive notifications when the target price is reached. Some users are receiving alerts for price decreases but not for increases, leading to incomplete monitoring.
No way to add comments - There’s no option to add notes to alerts, which is frustrating. I always want to jot down why I set a specific target price—should I buy, sell, or hold? But Yahoo doesn’t let me.
No email alerts - Yahoo only sends mobile notifications, which easily get lost among all my other alerts. Email would be a more reliable option since I check it daily and wouldn’t miss important alerts.
No alerts dashboard - After setting up multiple alerts, managing them becomes a mess. There’s no central dashboard to add, remove, or modify alerts in one place, which is especially frustrating when targets change or need additional notes.
Can’t create alerts via browser - I manage my portfolio on my computer, not my phone, but Yahoo only allows setting alerts through the mobile app. There’s no easy way to add or edit alerts via the browser, making it inconvenient for desktop users.
Only “target price” alerts - Yahoo only offers alerts for specific price targets, but I also want volatility alerts. My portfolio has a lot of small-cap stocks that move fast, and I need alerts based on price swings, not just fixed targets.
Yahoo Stock Alerts Alternative
I actively manage my own portfolio and got so frustrated with all the limitations of Yahoo Finance and Fidelity alerts that I decided to build a better alternative.
I created StockPriceAlerts.io, where you can easily track and manage all alerts that actually matter to your portfolio.
Okay, but how is it any better?
Comments - Add notes to your alerts so you remember why you set them. No more guessing your past decisions.
Email alerts - Get price notifications in your inbox, so they don’t get lost in mobile clutter. Email is more reliable for tracking important updates.
Alerts dashboard - View, edit, and manage all your alerts in one place. No more scattered or hard-to-find alerts.
Create alerts via browser - Set and manage alerts directly from your computer, not just a mobile app. Ideal for desktop users managing portfolios.
Target price and volatility alerts - Get notified not just when a stock hits a price (up or down), but also when it moves significantly (percentage wise). Perfect for tracking volatile and small-cap stocks.
